Lacrosse Recap- Week 3

Posted in Uncategorized on February 23, 2009 by shanshariff
Here is the recap for week three of the lacrosse season. Lets start with the picks I made on Friday. I predicted #4 Hopkins would struggle early then pull away from Siena in their season opener on Friday night. At the end of the first quarter it was Siena 3 Hopkins 2. Then the Blue Jays got going. They outscored Siena 9-0 over the last three quarters to win 11-3 . Steven Boyle and Kyle Wharton combined for 7 goals and 2 assists for the winners. I also said Loyola by 3-4 goals over Towson. The final score was Loyola 11 Towson 8. Collin Finnerty had 4 goals and one assist for the Greyhounds. Another prediction I made was the Navy/North Carolina game would be very close and maybe go to overtime. Sean Delaney scored the game tying and winning goals 50 seconds apart to give the #6 Tar Heels a 9-8 win over #8 Navy. In College Park #8 Georgetown upset #3 Maryland 13-10. Maryland’s Will Yeatman was held scoreless by the Hoyas defense which led to the win. In other action UMBC beat Rutgers 17-10. Here is some impressive attendance figures, Hopkins got 1,730 at their game, MD/Georgetown drew 2,530, Loyola/Towson drew another 2,436, and UMBC/Rutgers drew 1,102. If you consider its late February and temperatures were in the 30’s Friday night and 40’s on Saturday those figures are amazing,

In division three Salisbury used a 10-0 run from the 12:20 mark of the first quarter to the 5:18 mark of the third to beat Lynchburg 18-6. Kylor Berkman had 4 goals and 3 assists for the Gulls. The two local teams both have midweek games this week. Salisbury opens Capital Athletic Conference play when Wesley visits on Wednesday at 3pm. Remember Salisbury has never lost a CAC game. Washington College opens their season when Kean travels to Chestertown for a 4pm Wednesday afternoon start,

I will be back to preview week 4 on Friday including the Face-Off Classic taking place at M&T Bank Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Lacrosse Preview- Week 3

Posted in Uncategorized on February 20, 2009 by shanshariff

This weekend features the first televised games of the season and a couple big games. The action starts tonight at 6pm when #4 Johns Hopkins opens their season by hosting Siena College. This is a good opener for the Blue Jays because it will give them a chance to their inexperienced offense some playing time before the Princeton game next weekend. Hopkins lost three offensive stars to graduation in Paul Rabil, Stephen Peyser, and Kevin Huntley so other guys will need to fill their shoes. Hopkins will probably start off slowly and then pull away in the second half to win. This game is on ESPNU and the radio call is available on the Hopkins web site. The first big game of the weekend happens tonight in Chapel Hill when #9 Navy travels to #5 North Carolina. Both teams enter the game at 2-0 on the season. I see a very close maybe even an overtime game. The teams are to close for me to pick a winner but at 7:30 tonight we will all find out who wins. There is no tv or radio for this contest. Tomorrow the other big game of the weekend takes place in College Park when #8 Georgetown plays #3 Maryland. This is the season opener for Georgetown and should be the first test of the season for Maryland after two easy wins in Florida last weekend. Face Off at Ludwig Field is 1pm. The game is on ESPNU and there is a radio call available on Maryland’s web site. A local rivalry is renewed when Towson makes the short trip down Charles Street to #16 Loyola. Towson had a down year in 2008 and Loyola is looking to capitalize on their impressive 2008 season. I like Loyola by 3-4 goals. This game faces off at 1pm and is on Ch. 2 and wnst.net for the radio call. The last area D-1 game is Rutgers travels to UMBC for a 1pm game.

In division III Salisbury travels to Lynchburg for a 1pm face off tomorrow afternoon before coming home to face Wesley on Wednesday at 3pm. Washington College gets their season underway on Wednesday when Kean comes to town for a 4pm contest. The locals will sweep these three games.

I will recap on Monday.

Lacrosse Recap- Feb 16

Posted in Uncategorized on February 16, 2009 by shanshariff

Here is the week 2 college lacrosse recap. There were some great performances by teams and individuals this weekend. Lets start in division 3. Salisbury started their season off in style. They beat the University of Scranton 24-6 to win their 78th straight game and 75th straight at home. Here are some more impressive stats. Kylor Berkman had 4 goals and 5 assists for the Sea Gulls. That is his career high for points in a game. Salisbury trailed in the game 3-0 with 9:22 left in the first quarter. It was the first time since May 2007 they trailed by that score. Salisbury woke up with a 16-0 run. Scranton didn’t score again until the 5:22 mark of the third quarter. The Gulls out shot Scranton 61-30 and won the groundball war 57-31. They only downside was Salisbury took 10 penalties and had 29 turnovers. Both of those numbers are too high.
In division one Maryland got two wins in Jacksonville Florida. They beat Presbyterian 18-3 on Friday and Air Force 15-4 on Saturday. Will Yeatman a much talked about transfer from Notre Dame started his Terp career off with 3 goals and 7 assists in the two games. In other action Notre Dame beat Loyola 10-9 in Georgia. Collin Finnerty, the former Duke player, had 4 goals and an assist in defeat for Loyola. Navy beat Ohio State 8-6 before 2,554 people in Annapolis. Andy Warner had a goal and 3 assists for the Mids. Also UMBC beat Delaware 14-9.

I will be back on Friday to preview the weekend which includes season openers for Hopkins and Towson.

Lacrosse Preview- Feb 13

Lacrosse season is BACK!!  Unfortunately, I don’t know jack squat.  But our main man Bryan does.  Here is his first installment of the season:

Here is your preview for week 2 of the college lacrosse weekend. The big game of the weekend happens in Annapolis when #19 Ohio State travels to #9 Navy. Both teams had easy wins last weekend this should be a lot different. If Navy wants to win this they are going to have to play the full game not just the second half like they did last week vs, V.M.I. Face-Off is noon tomorrow at Navy Marine Corps Stadium.  The lacrosse weekend actually starts today in Jacksonville Florida of all places. Maryland is there to open their season in the “Face Off For A Cause” tournament which benefits the Wounded Warrior Project. The #3 Terps open with Presbyterian today at 2pm. Presbyterian is playing its first all division one schedule. I expect the Terps to roll in this one. Maryland then plays Air Force tomorrow at noon also in Florida. This game will be a tougher challenge but also a win for Maryland. In other local D-1 action UMBC travels to Delaware tomorrow at 1pm and Loyola plays Notre Dame tomorrow at 1pm. This game is being played in Georgia. This is part of an effort to spread the game to non-traditional places. In division three Salisbury opens their season Sunday against Scranton. I don’t know much about Scranton but I expect a Salisbury rout to start the season off right. I will recap all it on Tuesday after the holiday on Monday.

Lacrosse Recap- Feb 9

Posted in Uncategorized on February 13, 2009 by shanshariff
Before I get to the recap I am happy to say that the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four will be coming back to Baltimore. It was announced on Friday that Baltimore beat out Boston, The Meadowlands, and Denver for the 2010 and 2011 events. They will be held at M&T Bank Stadium. This year the Final Four is in Boston. Now on to the recap. Navy started out slowly. They were down to VMI 4-2 after one quarter and they were tied 5-5 at halftime. When the second half started the Mids woke up. They scored the only 8 goals of the half to win their season opener 13-5 before 2,063 people on a beautiful day in Annapolis. Ohio State, North Carolina, and Delaware also posted easy season opening wins this weekend. Navy and Ohio State meet this weekend in Annapolis in the season’s first big game. I will preview that along with the season openers for Maryland and Salisbury on Friday.

Here are my picks. In division three I see another rematch in the Salisbury/Cortland State rivalry with Coach Berkman getting yet another championship. Gettysburg and Stevenson which used to be Villa Julie College are also contenders and they both play in Salisbury during the regular season.  On my WNST.NET blog I compiled a list of all the big games in the state this spring. The link will be at the bottom of this entry. In division one I like the usual suspects in the Final Four again. I am going with Syracuse, Virginia, and Hopkins to make repeat trips and Maryland to join them. Unfortunately for the local teams I think the title will be heading to Virginia this season. They just have too many weapons this season. Cornell, Duke, and North Carolina are among the other top contenders.

I will be back Friday to preview the weekend action.

Lacrosse season is BACK!!  Unfortunately, I don’t know jack squat.  But our main man Bryan does.  Here is his first installment of the season:

Believe it not the college lacrosse regular season starts this weekend. Tomorrow afternoon Navy has their home opener against V.M.I. Navy comes into the season ranked #11 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll and should win this game rather easy. Face-Off is noon at Navy Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis. This is the only regular season game involving a state school this weekend. The rest have scrimmages including Salisbury’s annual trip to Duke. Score is not kept in scrimmages but it will give Coach Berkman a chance to see how this years team looks against a top division one team. I will recap the Navy game on Monday and make my picks for the final four and tell you who I think will win the national championship in D-1 and D-3.
