Lacrosse has always been immensely popular in the state of Maryland. Unfortunately, I know as much about the sport as Bryant Gumbel knows about play-by-play. Therefore, my main man Bryan will be hooking you up with the lacrosse knowledge throughout the season. Here is his latest installment:

Here is the recap for the lacrosse weekend. In division one Johns Hopkins snapped their five game losing streak with a 10-4 win over Maryland before a crowd of 8,626. The Blue Jays will travel to Annapolis on Saturday to face a Navy team they have beaten 33 straight times although the last five games have been decided by 1 goal. Navy had its 13 game winning streak over Army snapped Saturday by a score of 9-6. In other action UMBC beat Albany 14-10 so if the Retrievers beat Hartford this weekend they will host the America East Conference tournament. The winner of the tournament gets a NCAA bid. Loyola is 2 wins away from a NCAA bid of their own. The Greyhounds upset Georgetown 11-9 on Saturday and with wins over Fairfield and Hobart will win the ECAC’s automatic bid. Towson lost to Drexel 10-9. The Tigers are still in position to make the CAA tournament where they can try to win that conference’s bid. In division three Salisbury beat St. Mary’s 23-4 under the lights on Friday. The Sea Gulls start the CAC Tournament with a 4PM game with Hood College. Hood has been outscored 61-8 by Roanoke and Villa Julie in their last two games. If the seeds hold there will be a rematch between Villa Julie and Salisbury for the championship this Sunday in Salisbury. Washington College beat Dickinson 12-8. They host Franklin & Marshall Saturday night before the “War on the Shore” April 26th in Salisbury. Aside from Navy/Johns Hopkins game and the possible Villa Julie/Salisbury rematch there aren’t any other big games this weekend but I will preview it on Friday anyway.

This weekend features the annual Hopkins/Maryland game and many battles for conference titles. The biggest local game of the weekend is the annual Hopkins/Maryland game in Baltimore. Johns Hopkins comes in having lost 5 straight games for the first time in over 100 years of lacrosse and need a win to have a realistic shot at making the NCAA tournament. Maryland is coming off a tough loss to Navy and will be playing without leading scorer Travis Reed who is suspended. This game starts at 2PM on Ch. 2 and ESPNU. Before that game on ESPNU they will carry Army and Navy form West Point at noon. The winner of this game wins the Patriot League regular season and home field advantage for the conference tournament. First place in the ECAC and the inside track to an automatic NCAA birth will be on the line when Loyola hosts Georgetown tomorrow at 1PM. Also tomorrow the suddenly hot Towson Tigers host Drexel at 3PM on CN8. The Tigers have win 3 straight after a 1-6 s tart. UMBC hosts Albany in a big game in the America East title race tomorrow night at 7:30. In division three Salisbury looks to win their 14th straight CAC regular season title tonight when they meet former Sea Gull player Jayme Block’s St. Mary’s College team at 7PM in Salisbury. A win also means the Sea Gulls will not play another game away from Salisbury until the NCAA National Championship game should they get there. Washington College travels to Dickinson tomorrow for a 3PM Centennial Conference battle. I will recap it all on Monday.

Here is the preview for another huge weekend in college lacrosse. In division one it starts tonight when Navy tries to put a disappointing loss to Georgetown behind them when they travel to College Park to face a Maryland team coming off a huge win over Virginia. That games starts at 8PM and is on Ch. 2 and ESPNU. Tomorrow #10 Johns Hopkins will try to snap their four game losing streak when they travel to second ranked Duke at 6PM on ESPNU. Towson faces another critical CAA game when they host Delaware at noon on Ch. 2 and ESPNU. In other action tomorrow Loyola hosts Rutgers at 1PM and UMBC travels to Binghamton for a 7:30 game. In division three the two eastern shore teams both have huge games this weekend. In Chestertown #3 Washington College hosts #2 Gettysburg who is coming off a loss to Salisbury for the Centennial Conference regular season title at 4PM. Salisbury faces another big test when they travel to the old Colts and Ravens training facility in Owings Mills to face #12 Villa Julie tomorrow. This game is for the CAC regular season title and a #1 seed in the conference tournament. Both teams enter undefeated in conference play. The action starts at 2PM. I will be back on Monday with the recap.
Angelos Finally Getting His
Posted in Uncategorized on April 1, 2008 by shanshariffThanks to Chad Cordero (aka- the greatest closer of all time), I was able to attend the opening of Nationals Park. Besides the freezing conditions, the experience was pretty sick. Not only did George Bush throw out the first pitch (before getting booed), Ryan Zimmerman hit the game-winning walkoff.
The subsequent reaction has been electric. Forget about the newfound enthusiasm in DC, think of how this is literally eating up the owner of the Baltimore Orioles. Peter Angelos has tortured O’s fans for the past decade and know he’s getting his. His greatest fear was realized when MLB ok’d the Nationals move to Washington. There is now an ultimate consequence to the embarrasing was he has run his franchise. Local baseball fans can now jump on a local bandwagon that has a new direction, new stadium and new optimism.
In other words, Peter Angelos is suffering. That should be hilarious to all fans- Baltimore or not.
