The Lacrosse Blog

Lacrosse has always been immensely popular in the state of Maryland.  Unfortunately, I know as much about the sport as Lindsay Lohan knows about sobriety.  Therefore, my main man Bryan will be hooking you up with the lacrosse knowledge throughout the season.  Here is his latest installment:

This was an amazing weekend in college lacrosse. There were some huge attendance figures as well. In division 3 top ranked Salisbury was down 7-2 at halftime but came back in the second half to beat #2 Gettysburg before 3,550 people at Gettysburg. The Sea Gulls travel to Mary Washington on Wednesday for a CAC contest at 4 PM. Washington College beat Haverford 12-6 to set up their showdown with Gettysburg next Saturday in Chestertown. In division one fourth ranked Maryland beat #1 Virginia 13-7 before 4,239 people in College Park. Johns Hopkins lost their fourth straight game 13-8 to North Carolina in front of 4,250. With a trip to Duke and a game against red hot Maryland the next two weeks it gets no easier for the Blue Jays. Navy came back from a 8-3 third quarter deficit but ending up losing 11-10 in overtime to Georgetown on a goal by Ricky Mirabito whose older brother plays for Navy. There were 7,135 in attendance for that game in Annapolis. Loyola lost 13-8 to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. The Orange should be the new #1 team in the country when the poll comes out today. Towson and UMBC also got wins headed into their Tuesday night showdown. Towson beat Robert Morris 9-8 to snap a 4 game losing streak and UMBC beat Stony Brook 14-12. The Tigers and Retrievers meet on Tuesday in Towson at 7:30. This weekend has Maryland/Navy and Hopkins/Duke among the games. I will preview on Friday.

Here is the preview for a big weekend in college lacrosse.  First in division three #1 ranked Salisbury heads to #2 Gettysburg tomorrow for a 1PM faceoff.  In addition to their annual regular season meeting the Sea Gulls and Bullets have met twice in the last 3 years in the NCAA tournament.  Also tomorrow #4 Washington College heads to #8 Haverford for a 1PM faceoff before they host Gettysburg next Saturday.  In division one #1 Virginia travels to College Park for a noon faceoff against #4 Maryland.  That game will be on ESPN2.  Sixth ranked Johns Hopkins will try to snap a 3 game losing streak and get revenge for last years loss to #10 North Carolina.  Last year was the first time Hopkins lost to UNC since 1994. That game starts at 2pm and will be on ESPNU and Ch. 2. Ninth ranked Navy hosts #5 Georgetown tomorrow at 5PM in Annapolis.  That game will be on CBS College Sports which was known as CSTV.  The #12 UMBC Retrievers host Stony Brook tomorrow night at 7:30. Eighteenth ranked Loyola travels to #2 Syracuse for a 4PM faceoff and Towson is facing a must win situation when they travel to Robert Morris tomorrow.  At 1-5 on the year the Tigers can’t afford another CAA loss if they want to qualify for the conference tournament which only takes the top 4 teams.  I will recap all of this action on Monday.

Calling all Fantasy Freaks

ESPN’s fantasy baseball guru Matthew Berry will be joining Shan on New School Thursday to discuss all things fantasy MLB.  Most drafts have been completed but most leagues are won with waiver wire moves made during the season.  If you need a fantasy issue addressed, feel free to email questions to espn@mtslive.com and Matthew will hit em up at 3:20pm ET.

I know everyone has been focused on March Madness but the lacrosse season got a lot more interesting this weekend. In division one #1 Duke lost 11-7 to Georgetown on Saturday so Virginia will move up after handing Johns Hopkins their third straight overtime loss 13-12.  In other action Maryland beat North Carolina 13-8 to set up their showdown with UVA Saturday at noon in College Park.  In other action Navy beat Colgate 8-3, UMBC beat Ohio State 12-11 in overtime, Towson lost 13-8 to Hofstra, and Loyola beat UMASS 15-1.  In division three top ranked Salisbury had the weekend off after struggling to beat St Lawrence 11-10 on Thursday.  They host York tomorrow night at 7PM before traveling to #2 Gettysburg on Saturday.  In Chestertown Washington College moved to 7-0 on the season and #4 in the country with a 16-9 win over McDaniel Collge.  The Shoremen have their own showdown with Gettysburg on April 5th before what could be another huge “War on the Shore” on April 26th in Salisbury.  I will preview the huge upcoming weekend on Friday.

Let the madness begin

The best three weeks in sports begins today.  For some reason, women who don’t follow college hoops at all tend to win their office pools.  Therefore, I tried to enlist the help of a lucky lady but since girls generally don’t speak to me, I had to fill out the bracket myself.  Here’s the breakdown: Elite 8- Carolina, Louisville, Kansas, G-town, Memphis, Texas, UCLA and Purdue.  Final 4- NC, G-town, Memphis and the Bruins with UCLA taking out Carolina in the final 70-66.

Post your final four predictions right here and be honest if a female beats you when its all said and done.

We’re Dancin Baby

It only took nine years but I finally have a reason to have some athletic pride in my college.  American University is going to the big dance for the first time ever.  It doesn’t really matter that Tennessee will probably smash our brains in during the first round; just making it was our title game.  There were three hilaroius moments during the clinching win over Colgate: 1) Noticing the Eagles don’t have a player who looks like they can dunk; 2) Noticing the Eagles don’t have a player who looked to be taller than 6′5″ and 3) Noticing how the ESPN2 cameras had to zoom in to make it appear that our crowd was “swarming” the court.  AU plays Friday but the madness begins tomorrow.

My New Favorite Owner

Posted in Uncategorized on March 13, 2008 by shanshariff

The new owner of the New York Yankees is not only great for baseball, he’s great for sports.  During his brief tenure, Hank Steinbrenner has already called out the NFL, ESPN, the beloved Joe Torre and of course, Red Sox nation.  In a period where we are forced to discuss steroids, signing bonuses and arrest records, it’s nice to see Hank refuel the greatest rivalry in sports with his F-U comments to Beantown.

Name me another guy who has pimp-slapped Scott Boras AND spoken the truth about the free pass the NFL has received on steroids.  And he’s only a rookie owner!!!  Remember that his pops once said  that he’d never seen a sailboat make any headway in calm water.  I’m glad turtleneck jr. was listening.

Back and on the attack

Back from vacation.  Besides getting food poisoning, swimming with naked dudes and putting a chick in the hospital via the dancefloor, it was pretty uneventful.  Anyway it’s great to be back.  While I was gone Favre retired, the Rockets somehow kept winning and eveyone started to realize the Shaq trade was a mistake.  We’ll be covering it all on Monday’s show.  Hope you’re able to tune in.
